Soccer city stadium is the heart of the football stadium in South Africa. This stadium will be the main spot for the FIFA world cup 2010 as it is going to hold the opening and final matches.

The stadium is located in Johannesburg city and is next to the South African football association headquarters. The soccer city stadium is also called as First National Bank Stadium (FNB stadium).

The FNB stadium has been undergoing major upgradation for the world cup going to be held on 2010. The stadium will have the capacity of about 80,000 to 94,700 people in plastic bucket. At present the stadium is the third largest capacity stadium in the African nation. Once the major construction are over the stadium will be the biggest one in Africa.

The stadium was build on 1989 and is now renovated for the football 2010. The reconstruction started in early 2007 and has planned to be completed in 2009 October.

The FIFA organizing committee has planned to hold the opening match, first round match (4 matches), second round match (1 match), quarter final match and the finals.

The stadium has been reconstructed to include the following changes. The main important change to the interior of the stadium is to include the extension of the upper tier and encircling roof.

The upper tier will be developed around the stadium to boost the capacity of the stadium. New changing rooms, floodlights will be installed. The number of seats of the VIP will be increased to 195. The outside design of the stadium has been planned to give the appearance of the African cooking pot, the outside shield is a mosaic of fire with earthen colors. The bottom structure will have a ring of lights all around. This is planned to mimic the fire beneath the pot.
