Nelson Mandela stadium is the newly built stadium in Port Elizabeth city and was the first stadium to start construction out of the other five newly built stadiums. The construction was started in 2007 January. The stadium has been finished since it is one of the stadiums to hold the confederations cup 2009.

The stadium is very close to the N2 highway and is just 2 kilometres from the coast. And the stadium can be reached easily from Port Elizabeth with a 15m drive. The stadium is built with all the high tech facilities and has a medical and security facility as well.

Nelson Mandela stadium is the first soccer stadium to be built in the Eastern Cape Province. The construction cost was estimated to be around R2.1lbn. The capacity of the stadium will be around 44,000 with 4,000 temporary seats for world cup 2010. It also has 150 VIP suits, 60 business suits, parking bays, shops, gym and function rooms.

To withstand the high wind speed the stadium is designed with a stunning sunflower roof and also has 2 big viewing screens. The five-tier stadium is outfitted with the state of the art technology and has a good view to the shores of Indian Ocean and North End Lake.
