Loftus versfeld stadium is South Africa’s one of the oldest stadium. It is situated in the heart of Pretoria city and is 15min walk from Johannesburg city centre. Since 1903 the stadium has been used for the sporting events. The football world cup 2010 semi-final match is going to taken place in this stadium. So next to soccer city this has earned more famous name as it is going to host the semi-final match of the world cup.
Many international matches are being played in the stadium including the rugby matches. But the stadium is used only for football venue since from the apartheid period of South Africa.
The stadium underwent many renovations only in 1977 and the four major stands also were completely rebuilt at the same time. So it has only minimal renovations to be undertaken for the FIFA world cup 2010. The stadium will be upgraded to seat a capacity of 70,000. This capacity is 20,000 more than its previous one.
The major renovations include new roof for the eastern pavilion. Other works include turnstiles, new ablution facilities, sound system enhancement and designing a new scoreboard and media centre. The government has plan to spend R131 million for the renovation of the stadium. The stadium has been planned to complete to host the confederations cup matches in 2009.
Loftus is now the home place of Mamelodi Sundowns and Supersport united. Both these clubs are South Africa’s premiere football clubs.
